NEW - WICKLOW SURVEY
The latest phase of the project brings us to beautiful County Wicklow. After a fantastic response to the sightings survey in the midlands, we are now looking to County Wicklow where we hope to determine the current distribution of all three species. There are still some woods in Wicklow that support healthy red squirrel populations, but there are many more areas where the grey squirrel has moved in, sometimes replacing the red squirrel altogether. However, an increase in pine marten sightings in recent years suggests this elusive species is expanding its range in Wicklow, and so it will be interesting to see what effect (if any) this may have on squirrel distribution patterns. Any information on live sightings, suspected pine marten scats (faeces) and roadkill animals will be of great help to us! Likewise if you have seen either species of squirrel in recent years please let us know as every sighting is useful and will contribute towards a better understanding of the ecology of all three mammal species!
